Comment on this (0 so far) y2007m05d04 - There were some massive cargo ships loitering in the water. Comment on this (0 so far) y2007m05d02 - We took a ferry to Vancouver Island.
Comment on this (0 so far) y2007m05d01 - The Cottles let us use their very nice Volvo - thanks heaps! Comment on this (0 so far) y2005m10d19 - A parting shot of Darth.
Comment on this (0 so far) y2005m09d20 - The pipe running from the exhaust manifold to the turbo inlet came loose while Dad was driving one day. Instead of only replacing that section, we built a new exhaust system from stainless steel with greater flow. It took some time to build but at 1:30 one morning we finished and I took it for a test drive. All was well, and it was done in time to travel to Cornwall later that morning. Oh, ya, the photo is of a stainless steel flange I helped make. They take a while to make from scratch but look pretty. Comment on this (0 so far) y2005m08d20 - Once Darth was on the road and had some of kilometers under its belt we took it to Mostport International Speedway to compete in King of the Hill. On Saturday evening at the stock car track during intermission there is a chance for people to race their street cars. The vehicles race in pairs for one lap, and the winners pair up with the winners until their is only one car left. Dad drove, of course (I'd have been scared out of my wits). In this photo Dad is at the starting line with a Mazda RX7, the toughest competitor in the evening's group.
Comment on this (0 so far) y2005m08d20 - The RX7 is passing Dad as they go into turn 3. Comment on this (0 so far) y2005m08d20 - Dad outpowered the RX7 to the finish line! This photo is of the third and final round - Darth versus some white car. Dad is just ahead of it as they move into turn 3. Dad went wide though, and the other vehicle passed him! It was still ahead when they shot out of the last turn. Dad tromped on the throttle and roared past the opponent just in time!
Comment on this (0 so far) y2005m08d20 - Dad and Darth - a winning combination. Excellent work, you two! Comment on this (0 so far) y2004m10d28 - See - a real live "Honda CRV"
Comment on this (0 so far) y2004m10d28 - I took a bunch of photos like a week before all these and then discovered I had "Macro" set on the camera so all the shots were fuzzy. And then I had to wait quite a while to find a time when it was sunny and the CRV was home. Comment on this (0 so far) y2004m10d28 - Not too bad lookin'...
Comment on this (0 so far) y2004m10d28 - He's got a sparkling personality, really! Comment on this (0 so far) y2004m10d28 - "Grrr!! Gimme some mountains!" Yep, this beast has on-demand 4 wheel drive. So when the front paws begin to spin the hind legs kick in. It'll be nice for winter driving.
Comment on this (0 so far) y2004m10d28 - Normally I don't use the rear view mirror but it made a good photo-op. Comment on this (0 so far) y2004m10d28 - Check it out! Overhead map lights! Whoa, cool!
Comment on this (0 so far) y2004m10d28 - Pilot's and navigator's seats. Comment on this (0 so far) y2004m10d28 - The back seats offer lots of room.
Comment on this (0 so far) y2004m10d28 - And they fold down pretty much flush with the spacious trunk. Comment on this (0 so far) y2004m10d28 - Here's a look through the back window (which flips up) into the trunk.
Comment on this (0 so far) y2004m10d28 - Same view point but with the seats down. Comment on this (0 so far) y2004m10d28 - The back closed...
Comment on this (0 so far) y2004m10d28 - ...and open. Always remember to shut the bottom part before that breakable glass part! Comment on this (0 so far) y2004m10d28 - OK, forget the looking - let's hit the road!
Comment on this (0 so far) Darth wasn't yet running at this point. I thought "Darth" was a good name because it fits the sinister black body and tinted windows. Comment on this (0 so far) Here it is from another angle.
Comment on this (0 so far) Oooo! What's under the hood? Though the engine doesn't look too pretty at this point, inside it is ported and polished with forged pistons. Comment on this (0 so far) To prevent any nasty detonation from plaguing the engine, we installed a J & S Electronics SafeGuard system. It can hear knocking and retard the timing. It also comes with a monitor showing the amount of retardation and the air/fuel ratio. Very nice little setup.
Comment on this (0 so far) "OK, so where does the red wire go...?" I did most of the installation of the SafeGuard system. I was quite a newbie to car electronics but I learned a lot. (It felt like I did, at least...) Comment on this (0 so far) Ugh! What's that spindly creature inhabiting the car? Oh, uhh, ya, I guess that's just me...
Comment on this (0 so far) Under dash work - dark, cramped, hot... But when everything is wired up and working - satisfying. Comment on this (0 so far) Dad is welding the aforementioned flange to the turbo outlet pipe.
Comment on this (0 so far) "14 kids in an old church van (14 kids in an old church), with a light in their eyes and some tracts in their hands (14 kids in an old church van)" - Blitz by Audio Adrenaline Comment on this (0 so far)
Comment on this (0 so far) There were lots of Beetles in Mexico.
